The post office is a defining element in Utrecht’s city centre. In terms of size, it’s one of the largest buildings in the centre. A building that’s lost its function as a post office but offers new opportunities. Those opportunities are especially in the exceptional architecture of the premises, along the lines of the original, central hall that, of course, remains upheld in the plans.
The post office closed its doors in 2011 and then functioned as a telephone exchange until 2015. In order to preserve the building, and to make it accessible to the residents of Utrecht, MRP Development has developed a concept for ASR VV in which the following are key: shopping, eating, drinking, meeting and gathering.
Utrecht’s Central Library, including in the monumental hall, will be housed on the side of ‘de Neude’. A number of catering establishments will be part of the library. A number of magnificent (large) shops are being housed on the side of the Oudegracht and in the basement.
